TOTEM: Journal of Visual Culture and Creative Studies is an international, peer-reviewed, and open-access academic journal dedicated to the critical exploration of visual phenomena, contemporary design, and creative innovations. The journal serves as a sophisticated, interdisciplinary forum for scholars, artists, critics, and creative practitioners to publish original research, theoretical inquiries, and practice-led studies that examine how visual media shape and are shaped by historical, social, and technological contexts.
Scope and Topics TOTEM welcomes high-quality submissions that challenge traditional boundaries and explore new methodologies in the realm of the visual and creative worlds. The scope encompasses a wide array of fields, including but not limited to:
-
Visual Culture and Media Studies: Analysis of film, photography, digital media, advertising, television, and internet cultures.
-
Creative Industries & Design Studies: Graphic design, fashion, architecture, industrial design, and the management of creative ecosystems.
-
Fine Arts and Contemporary Practice: Painting, sculpture, performance art, and curation within modern art institutions.
-
Material and Spatial Culture: The study of public spaces, street art, museum exhibitions, and the semiotics of objects.
-
Digital Humanities & Visual Technologies: Virtual/Augmented Reality (VR/AR), artificial intelligence in creative fields, and data visualization.
Publication Frequency and Access TOTEM is published biannually (twice a year). The journal strictly operates under an Open Access policy. All articles are immediately, permanently, and freely available for anyone worldwide to read, download, copy, and distribute under a Creative Commons (CC) license, fostering a more inclusive and global exchange of creative and intellectual ideas.
Peer Review Process To guarantee academic rigor and fresh critical perspectives, every submitted manuscript undergoes a strict double-blind peer review process. Independent experts from global artistic and academic communities evaluate the submissions based on their conceptual originality, theoretical depth, methodological soundness, and visual relevance. The identities of both the authors and the reviewers remain completely anonymous throughout the process.
Mission Statement: The mission of TOTEM is to cultivate a deep, critical understanding of the visual world and to serve as a symbolic "totem"—a gathering point—for cutting-edge creative research. By bridging the gap between rigorous theoretical analysis and vanguard creative practices, the journal aims to elevate contemporary discourse, inspire innovative visual methodologies, and highlight the powerful impact of the creative arts on transforming global society.
